Votetaker's Comments
Barry:-
After a small problem during the Call for Nominations, where a potential
nominator chose to use a different address to normal, which resulted in
the source of their confirmation being anonymised, and the candidate
supplying details of additional nominators, the Election ran reasonably
smoothly.
Having said that, as can be seen in the summary at the top of this
results post:-
a) Two people failed to provide their name in the space provided on the
ballot paper, so their votes were initially rejected, but they did
correct their mistake.
b) One vote resulted in a Challenge/Response e-mail from the voting
address. As per usual UKVoting practice, this was treated as a
bounce, and the vote was not counted.
c) Eight votes were disallowed for attempted multivoting. As is usual
in such cases, the exact method by which this was detected will not
be made public, but suffice to say, it wasn't hard to do so.
To close, I'd like to be the first to congratulate Geoff, Mark and
Alison on their Election, and offer commiserations to Paul, Graham,
Andrew and Thomas. Still, there's always next year.
I can't speak for the rest of UKVoting, but it'll be a shame to see
Mark, currently our Deputy Co-Ordinator, leaving after nearly six years
on the team, making him the third longest serving member after Jon and
myself, and I wish him the best of luck in his new role.
Pedt:-
Barry conducted a model vote for this year's Committee election. As the
Secondary Votetaker there was very little for me to do other than to
perform my own manual count to confirm the result, although I did take
on the duty of announcing the nominations to uk.net.news.management
after a nomination form was received.
I'd just like to add my own congratulations to those elected and wish
them the best of luck and offer my commiserations to the others.

Statement:
I hate to start on a negative note but it's probably fair to say that
the glory days of Usenet are over. Having said that I remain passionate
about Usenet and regard it as the 'Internet's best kept secret'. It is
educational, entertaining and informative and has helped and entertained
me enormously over the years. So much so that I am pleased to have been
able to put something back in my two terms in office as well as
maintaining the RFDMaker, and as UK Usenet Mentors Oversight Person with
Long Title.
As technical adviser to the us.* Interim Committee, I am constantly made
aware of what a good system we have here. uk.* is one of the great
success stories of Usenet and I hope it will remain so for a long time
to come. I'd very much like to continue to be part of that success
story. I hope my track record speaks for itself and that you will
support me in my bid for a third term.

Name : Roger Hayter
E-Mail: roger (at) hayter (dot) demon (dot) co (dot) uk
Statement:
I am a Training Officer, currently working within the NHS IT rollout
programme. I have been a regular participant in the UK hierarchy since
around 1999, with a 6 month break at the end of the year 2001.
I make no bones about my reason for standing for the committee. It is
time to step above personal issues, and consider not what the benefit to
the individual would be in any circumstance, but the benefit to the
hierarchy as a whole.
Since returning to usenet a little under 3 years ago, I have tried (and
have not always succeeded) to avoid the errors I made in the past, admit
my mistakes, and robustly challenge actions by Committee Members and UK
Voting which do not seem to be in the best interest of the UK hierarchy.
If you select me as a committee member, I will offer my judgement, my
diligence and my experience freely without complaint.

E-Mail: chl (at) clerew (dot) man (dot) ac (dot) uk
Statement:
I was originally coopted onto the committee in April 2003 and was then
elected for a full term later that year. If elected again I would
continue to work in the same way that I have done up to now. I feel that
the process works far better when all parties work together applying
common sense rather than trying to prove they have the right to do X and
think that things have improved in that regard over the last few months.
I am also a believer that the D in RFD is important, the best proponents
listen to the discussion and try to work with the community at large for
consensus rather than trying to defend their original proposal to the
death and hope they have the numbers to force it through a vote. In
general I believe that charters are best viewed as a guide to help
people rather than as a set of rules to be enforced and that ignoring or
filtering those seeking to disrupt groups is a better deterrent than
complaining.

Statement:
I have been reading and contributing to usenet, and uk.* in particular,
for over ten years. I run my own news server, and look after the
sysadmin side of a moderated uk.* newsgroup. I have been the
(successful!) proponent of three uk.* newsgroups. I currently work as a
web author and programmer, prior to that I managed the technical support
team for a major UK ISP. I am currently a votetaker; I will, of course,
stand down from UKVoting if elected.
Beyond this basic information, I hope that people will judge me on my
record of contributions to uk.* over the past few years.

My name is Andrew Hodgson, and I have been a participant in Usenet for
around 8 years, and a participant in UNNC/M for around 2 years. Whilst I
don't feel I would be able to change anything much in the committee
(because I am happy with how things run currently), I feel I could take
an active role in discussions on the committee.

E-Mail: horrid (dot) squeak (at) zetnet (dot) co (dot) uk
Statement:
When explaining to an electorate why you wish to stand for office, you
must first question why you are doing it! I thought about this long and
hard; it's a compliment to have others suggest and support me, but
flattery is never a good motivation for action in my book.
So, why am I standing? I believe strongly in key principles in both Real
Life and Usenet. Firstly, if you are part of a community, then at some
point making a contribution becomes essential if that community is to
thrive and grow. This is my way of trying to give something back after
many years of enjoyment and participation.
I believe in due process, fair play, the English Law concept of
reasonableness and the rights of the individual to be heard no matter
how unpopular or contentious their point of view. The UK hierarchy
should not be constrained by unnecessary bureaucracy, nor should it ever
become a bear garden where only the loudest are heard. Consensus and
reasoned argument are key; and change can be a Good Thing.
