3) Votetaker Comments

Apologies for the late posting of these results. This was mainly due
to work encroaching on my time and Demon's mail servers "holding on"
to the last few votes so I had to recalculate the result.

After the experience of the 2000 Elections, this was nice and simple,
with only one vote returned as invalid, and the voter did correct his
error.

The voting procedures still seem to make the whole Elections procedure
unnecessary, and (once again) I hope the charter is amended in time
for the next run.

- ----------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Voting and Appeal guidelines

This vote was conducted by a neutral third party member of
UKVoting. UKVoting is a group of independent votetakers who count votes
on behalf of the uk.* hierarchy and other 3rd parties.

The rules under which votes for the uk.* hierarchy are taken are posted
regularly to uk.net.news.announce or can be found at the following URL:

<ftp://sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk/usenet/news-info/news.answers/uk/voting>

The UKVoting web pages can be found at <http://www.ukvoting.org.uk/>

There is a five day discussion period after these results are posted to
uk.gay-lesbian-bi

Allegations of irregularity should be sent to ukvoting@ukvoting.org.uk.

- ----------------------------------------------------------------------

5) Moderation Panel Elections Guidelines

>From the charter for uk.glb:

Election

2 Initially moderators shall be the panel elected as part of
the charter change process.

3. Then each year there after elections will be held for the posts
of moderator.

i. 11 months after moderation comes into effect (and every twelve
months subsequently) the moderation panel will appoint a neutral party
to conduct the election as vote taker. The vote taker will issue a
call for nominations for a new moderation panel.

ii. Nominations will be open for 10 days and to be valid each nominee
will have to be proposed and seconded by white list posters
self-nomination is permitted). All white list posters shall have the
right to vote, regardless as to whether they were white listed before
or after the opening of nominations.

iii. At the end of 10 days a list of candidates (including their
proposers/seconders) will be published.

iv. A five day period of hustings will be held during which the
candidates will answer questions from posters to the group.

v. The vote taker will issue the first call for votes, to be
followed by a second call for votes five days later, the voting
period lasting in all for 10 days, votes shall only be valid if
submitted on official ballot forms.

vi. Voting will be by the Single Transferable Vote method, with
a reopen nominations candidate (RON) added to the ballot.

If RON passes the quota then all the then unfilled places are
void requiring a new election for those vacancies.

vii. Each voter shall receive an acknowledgement from the vote taker.
They will be given a unique identification as part of their
acknowledgement, this will enable them to verify their vote when the
result is published while protecting their identity from other voters.

viii. The vote taker will publish the result and a voting list
comprising voter identifiers and their vote.

xi. In the event of less than 4 moderators being elected or RON
passing quota the vote taker will issue a second request for
nominations no later than 1 month after the close of ballot
and hold elections for the remaining vacancies.

Those elected at this election shall serve until the annual
round of elections are held.

CANDIDATES:

The following nominations were received and accepted:

Please find below details of the people who nominated each candidate
(Name & Email Address) and a short statement from each candidate:

- ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Candidate 1 : Pete Denton pjdno tnedn et

Nominator 1 = Richard G richa rdgnt lworl dcom
Nominator 2 = Stephen Baines steph enkit schca mppal aceor guk

Statement:

I am just completing my first year as a moderator and am seeking re-
election for a second term of one year. I feel that it is important
for there to be a good balance between existing and new moderators each
year - this should allow new blood to bring fresh ideas into the system
whilst still maintaining a consistent set of core principles from year
to year.

If I am re-elected I intend to stand down at the end of my second term.

- ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Candidate 2 : Stephen M Baines steph enkit schca mppal aceor guk

Nominator 1 = Martin marti nspee dsixd emonc ouk
Nominator 2 = Pete Denton pjdno tnedn et

Statement:

I've been a poster to UK.GLB for the past 2 years and have taken as
active a part in the newsgroup as time allows. Whilst moderating a
newsgroup isn't a glamour job, I know that the fact that the newsgroup
*is* moderated meant that I felt able to contribute to it when I was
struggling with my sexuality a few years back, and now I feel it's my
turn to try and put something back. I do have experience of moderation,
as I am also a moderator of a nomex-undies related newsgroup, and have
been for 2 years, also using webstump as the moderation software. I
also think that having more moderators outside of the M25 can only be a
positive thing and add more "UK" to uk.glb.

Nominator 1 = Matthew Malthouse matth ewcal meill esdem oncou k
Nominator 2 = Adrian Hadayah adria ndiat omnet

Statement:

Only starting to post here after moderation kicked in, having been
reading here for several years, I fully support its aims and having
joined the ranks as part of the new mods last year offer myself for
re-election.

While there are a couple of ambiguous areas within the current policy,
I'd like to see the group as open and as safe a space as is practical;
however, although on a personal level I'm wary of censorship, I'd
support the means whereby continual violations of safe space, such as
a persistent, malicious and threatening attack with an intent to cause
personal distress, could result in some sort of open vote for a review
and possible period of withdrawal of the author's automatic posting
rights.

I value the group highly and welcome the opportunity to do something,
to ensure it remains as open, readable and welcoming as possible, by
sharing in the task of moderation.

Candidate 7 : Susan Brace susan sobri quetc ouk

Nominator 1 = Richard G richa rdgnt lworl dcom
Nominator 2 = Lyn David Thomas lynci bwrfr eeser vecou k

Statement:

I hadn't really given the idea of becoming a moderator much thought
before I was asked whether I'd consider giving it a go. I suppose my
main reason for deciding to complete this form is my belief in the
concept that "all it needs for evil to prosper is for people of
goodwill to do nothing". Now, I know "evil" may be a tad strong for
these circumstances, but the concept remains. This place has been good
to me, it is still an oasis of class in a sea of arse, and I'm prepared
to put in some effort to keep it that way.

Candidate 8 : Bod ukglb modbo dnetc om

Nominator 1 = Richard Lucking modsg ayboy orguk
Nominator 2 = Paul G notio npadd ingto norgu k

Statement:

I have been a moderator for the last year and am quite happy to
continue for another year, to help there be some continuity between the
old panel and the new one.

However it seems to be customary for moderators to read all posts in
the newsgroup; experience over the last year (and a 20,000 post
backlog!) has told me that I have no chance whatsoever of reading the
whole group, sorry. If you are prepared to have me as a moderator under
that condition, then "Vote Bod"! :-)

Candidate 9 : Graham Reilly Graha mReil lyven detta demon couk

Nominator 1 = Richard G richa rdgnt lworl dcom
Nominator 2 = Matthew Malthouse matth ewcal meill esdem oncou k

Statement:

I said it last year, and I'll say it again. All you need is love, and
a little bit of thought every now and again.

In the 3 1/2 years since I came out the closet, uk.gay-lesbian-bi has
played a large part in helping me find my feet and find myself in often
troublesome times. From this, I hope I know what it feels like to be
on the outside. I feel that I want to give something back to the group,
and becoming a moderator is a good way to do it. I have been a
moderator for the past year, and I hope that in that time I have
interpreted and applied the charter fairly, realistically and to the
best of my ability. I would aim to do so again.

Nominator 1 = Stephen Baines steph enkit schca mppal aceor guk
Nominator 2 = Matthew Malthouse matth ewcal meill esdem oncou k

Statement:

I've been an active poster on uk.glb for several years now. I
have been serving as a moderator for the last 12 months, and am happy
to do so for another year.
