We dropped the ball on this one, with a combination of a late request to the Committee to resolve the tie to create the third vacancy and problems with my mail setup combining to cause the Call for Applications not to go out until late October, with the CFV delayed as a result. As can be seen from the summary of mail received during the voting period, there were more test messages than usual. This mostly stems from a desire to check the functionality of the updated ballot handling system compared to the previous version. As usual, voter validation proved relatively straightforward for the most part, with the vast majority being regulars. Having said that, one would be voter submitted a ballot with a voting preference that could generously be described as "ambiguous", but they corrected this upon receipt of the rejection message. Anyway, that's enough waffle from me. Let me end by congratulating Owen, Molly and Charles on their re-election, and offering comiserations to Paul. Jon:- All credit for this vote goes to Barry for arranging it smoothly and efficiently, and congratulations to the elected committee members. ====================================================================== Voting and Appeal Information This vote was conducted by neutral third party members of UKVoting. UKVoting is a group of independent votetakers who count votes on behalf of the uk.* hierarchy and other 3rd parties. The rules under which votes for the uk.* hierarchy are taken are posted regularly to uk.net.news.announce or can be found at the following URL: The UKVoting web pages can be found at There is a five day discussion period after these results are posted to uk.net.news.announce. Allegations of irregularity should be sent to the committee via email to: control (at) usenet (dot) org (dot) uk. ====================================================================== (The information in this and the following section is a copy of that provided in the CFV) Definition of Open Class of Membership Any participant in the uk.* hierarchy qualifies as a candidate in the Open class. ======================================================================== Application Requirements Any participant in the uk.* hierarchy qualifies as a nominator for the Open class. Any individual may nominate a maximum of three candidates. ======================================================================== Persons retiring from the Committee In accordance with the Committee Document, the following Open Class Members have served a full three year term and are deemed to be retiring from the Committee. They are eligible for re-election. Molly Mockford Charles Lindsey As this results in fewer than three vacant seats, the next longest serving member (counted from the most recent date they were elected or co-opted to the Committee) retires to create the third vacancy. This gives a four way tie between the following Open Class Members: Geoff Berrow Mark Goodge Fiona Gostling (aka 'Kat') Clive George In accordance with established procedures, UKVoting requested that the Committee resolve the tie. Accordingly, the following Open Class Member has retired early to create the third vacant seat. He is eligible for re-election. Geoff Berrow =================================================================== Candidates Four applications were received. The Committee had three vacancies and therefore an Election was held to fill the three vacancies. A list of the candidates is below: Molly Mockford Candidate A Paul Cummins Candidate B Owen Dunn Candidate C Charles Lindsey Candidate D Please find below details of the people who nominated each candidate (Name & Email Address) and a short statement from each candidate. Note: In each case, only the names of the first four nominators to confirm their nomination are listed. ======================================================================== Candidate A Name: Molly Mockford E-Mail: com2016 (at) mollymockford (dot) me (dot) uk Nominators: Name: Brian J Forster E-Mail: Brian (at) bjforster (dot) force9 (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Tony Evans E-Mail: tony (at) darkstorm (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Matt Dawson E-Mail: matt (at) chronos (dot) org (dot) uk Name: paul E-Mail: usenet (at) watman (dot) clara (dot) co (dot) uk Personal Statement: In the words of a 19th century medical ethicist, "Primo non nocere" - "First, do no harm". I feel this is a very useful maxim for the Committee. Most of the time we have very little to do, and this is because things are proceeding smoothly and quietly. Now and then there is a flurry of activity, and we are called upon to make decisions, which we do to the best of our ability. It is not for Committee pro-actively to steer uk.* Usenet except in the most urgent of emergencies, but simply to respond coolly and sensibly to queries and other contacts from the uk.* community; and it is my firm belief that this is how we should continue in the future. If nothing needs to be done, nothing should be done simply for the sake of being seen to do something. ======================================================================== Candidate B Name: Paul Cummins E-Mail: paulcummins (at) tiscali (dot) co (dot) uk Nominators: Name: Steve G8IZY E-Mail: G8IZY (at) blueyonder (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Pedt E-Mail: laughs (at) manygiggl (dot) es Name: Mike Fleming E-Mail: mike (at) tauzero (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Stephen Thomas Cole E-Mail: usenet (at) stephenthomascole (dot) com Personal Statement: I really don't need to say much about myself. For all my fuckwittery, I have been a stalwart of UK Usenet for close to two decades. ======================================================================== Candidate C Name: Owen Dunn E-Mail: owend (at) chiark (dot) greenend (dot) org (dot) uk Nominators: Name: Mark Goodge E-Mail: mark (at) good-stuff (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Sara Merriman E-Mail: saramerriman (at) blueyonder (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Matthew Vernon E-Mail: matthew (at) debian (dot) org Name: Ian Jackson E-Mail: ijackson (at) chiark (dot) greenend (dot) org (dot) uk Personal Statement: I've been reading and posting to Usenet and uk.* for a little over twenty years. Standing for the Committee is a way of giving a little back. I don't see myself or the Committee as having a particularly activist role; it's largely a matter of keeping custody of the Guidelines and ensuring that things keep ticking over. ======================================================================== Candidate D Name: Charles Lindsey E-Mail: chl (at) clerew (dot) man (dot) ac (dot) uk Nominators: Name: Brian J Forster E-Mail: Brian (at) bjforster (dot) force9 (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Sara Merriman E-Mail: saramerriman (at) blueyonder (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Paul Cummins E-Mail: paulcummins (at) tiscali (dot) co (dot) uk Name: Peter Parry E-Mail: peter (at) wpp (dot) ltd (dot) uk Personal Statement: I have been on the Committee since it was set up, and have been Deputy Control throughout that time. I look after the UsenetUK website (and thanks to those who point out occasional omissions) and oversee the regular postings to UNNA. I also manage our mailing lists and forwarding to moderators held on Gradwell.com (who provide these facilites for free). As other Gradwell customers will know, this is a somewhat hairy experience at the present time. And I am willing to carry on these serveices so long as people want me to. Apart from that, I tend to keep my mouth shut. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: 1.4.12 Charset: noconv iQCVAwUBWFxMsmOfGXkh8vHZAQKpJQP+NaOw4BnIjabAi9LfTSIt9panOx3PeIlG RjRI0xNlORp4F7x6N6+XD84Fxef91chza4QjhdAyn7cS0mTTORwpMRuXiaVq0Gw7 lZutOIchu9GIwwydKQXXVDBBmAW775X7n13ObmEVuFP7kFdTMDuKB0Scx5k1Wfs2 FA+BlWMSFZ4= =//Jv -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
